Nottingham Forest now hold the keys to Sunderland’s pursuit of Jhon Lucumi

Sunderland’s hopes of landing Bologna defender Jhon Lucumí could now hinge on Nottingham Forest.

Reports in Italy suggest the Black Cats have returned with a fresh offer for the Colombian centre-back – €28m plus €2m in bonuses, along with a 10–20% sell-on clause.

Bologna have so far rejected the bid, but crucially they have admitted to the player that he will be sold if a suitable replacement can be brought in.

Deal Depends on Forest

That replacement may well be Nottingham Forest’s Morato. Both Il Resto del Carlino and Gazzetta dello Sport state that Bologna have made an approach for the Brazilian defender, valued between €10m and €12m.

The Serie A club are understood to enjoy a good relationship with Forest, which could help speed up negotiations.

For Sunderland, that means the green light on Lucumí’s transfer rests firmly with Forest. If the Tricky Trees agree to part with Morato, Bologna will allow Lucumí to leave – clearing the path for the Black Cats to complete one of the most ambitious signings in their recent history.

Everything now points to Forest holding the decisive say. Until they resolve Morato’s future, Lucumí’s move to Wearside will remain on hold – but should talks advance quickly, Sunderland’s patience could soon be rewarded.

What Lucumí Could Bring to Sunderland

If Sunderland do get their man, they will be signing a defender in his peak years with experience across Serie A and international football with Colombia.

Lucumí’s ability to read the game, dominate aerially, and step out confidently with the ball could make him the cornerstone of a backline in the Premier League.

For supporters, this deal would represent more than just another signing – it would be a statement of intent and round off a fantastic transfer window.
